NOSTRA Workshop n°3 - Maritime safety and Green transport

At the invitation of County of Ostholstein and the Danish region of Zealand, the partners of the EU project NOSTRA (network of straits) met two days on Fehmarn and Lolland, to discuss the ship's safety in the straits and environmentally friendly as possible traffic. The coasts on both sides of the Fehmarn Belt - like all sea routes - are most at risk for possible shipwrecks. The conference participants noted that there are many good examples of how to avoid accidents, damage control and the organization of cooperation across national borders

The Central Command Unit in Cuxhaven, which is responsible for the coordination of the entire mission with greater damage cases in Germany, is a European specialty. It was called “a positive example for others” by the English colleagues from Dover. From there side the Anglo-French unit (MIRG) reported that it is equipped for a coordinated effort for accidents on ships in the channel area. It was agreed on this issue further exchange between the partners.
The phrase "more transportation - less traffic" also moved the discussion. On "green traffic" issue reported the Danes from an Interreg project concerning the traffic corridor Oresund-Femern-Hamburg. The aim of the project is to reduce the negative environmental consequences of the growing freight traffic. This is being done in collaboration with public authorities, companies and transport businesses. Naturally, the plans for the fixed link across the belt ware of great in

terest.A French idea was combination of rail and highway with a nature strip in the middle – thus connecting infrastructure with nature areas.

The already dense and increasing traffic through the Fehmarn Belt makes it necessary to take action on the safety of shipping. Here, the experience from other regions in Europe can be very helpful. By planning the tunnel, already numerous working groups were concerned with the future safety measures. This includes the introduction of a German-Danish monitoring unit.

In addition to field trips and lectures, the participants were able to discuss extensively about the situation in the various straits and the good examples on the second day of the well-organized workshop. The good weather also contributed to the success of the workshop.

All presentations and good practices from the workshop are available under the download section of the website.
